As a celebrity makeup artist, I am always tuned into the gorgeous hair and makeup on the red carpets, and I am currently obsessed with Kerry Washington and Sarah Hyland’s style from the Emmy Awards. Short textured hair, soft smoky eyes, with neutral lip color: they both looked chic and effortless. I know I will be trying this look on myself this season, and wanted to share a simple breakdown of how to achieve it using only products you can find at the drugstore.
KERRY WASHINGTON
The Faux Bob:
For those of you who have long hair, but want to achieve a faux bob like Kerry Washington, here are some tips:
Curl your hair with the Conair Instant Heat Curling Iron 1”-1.25”
After you curl all of your hair, start dividing it into sections, folding the ends under and pinning the bottom part of your hair to the base of your neck to create that bob illusion.
If you have layers, you can leave the top layer of your hair loose so that your faux bob will look more natural. If your hair does not have any layers, leave some strands loose in the front to achieve the natural look.
The Makeup:
Kerry Washington’s makeup was beautifully simple at the Emmy’s. She used gold and taupe colors on her eyes – Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow Palette, Nudes would be a great palette to achieve her look. To keep your eye makeup clean and fresh, I suggest lining the under eyes with gold and taupe eye shadow colors, skip the eyeliner!
I also love her overall bronzy feel that she has on her skin with minimal blush. Milani Baked Bronzer is a great color for your cheeks.
My favorite part of this look is her natural lip color. It perfectly complements the simple neutral eye and sun-kissed skin. Wet and Wild Balm Stain in Rico Mauve would be a great finishing touch.
SARAH HYLAND
The Faux Bob:
For those of you who have short hair, what you need to do to achieve Sarah Hyland’s look is to curl your hair using a curling wand. One of my favorites is T-Studio Ceramic PEARL Professional Curling Wand by Remington. Remember to keep your curls loose so that it looks simple, effortless, and chic.
The Makeup:
Compared to Kerry Washington, Sarah Hyland’s makeup was a little bit sultrier, especially on her eyes. Sarah used a mixture of deep purple and black to achieve those soft smoky eyes – I recommend using The Smokey Shadow Palette from NYX. Use a deep purple color to fill in the inner corner of your eyes and use grey and black to fill in the outer corner to give more definition. Don’t forget to apply L’Oreal Paris Infallible Lacquer Liner in Blackest Black—my only tip is to apply the eyeliner to only half of your upper and lower lash line so that your smoky eyes look softer. Finish with fake eyelashes to really make your eyes pop!
Her natural glow on her cheeks can be achieved using FIT me blush from Maybelline in Medium Coral. Apply Physician Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Pressed Bronzer to give a little bit of an overall bronzy feeling to your face as well.
Lastly, she keeps her lip color natural. I use Sonia Kashuk Satin Luxe Lip Color SPF 16 in Nude Pink. Now you’re ready to walk the red carpet!
